The Winged Nike of Samothrace, also known as the Victory of Samothrace, is a magnificent Hellenistic sculpture that was created around 200-190 BC. Carved from Parian marble, it was discovered in 1863 on the island of Samothrace, in the northeastern Aegean. This majestic piece was created to honor the goddess Nike and to commemorate a naval victory. It originally stood upon a pedestal shaped like a ship's prow, overlooking the sanctuary of the Great Gods, symbolizing the goddess descending from the skies to bestow victory. Its dynamic posture, with wings outstretched and garments flowing as if swept by the sea breeze, is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of ancient art, embodying both motion and triumph. The statue's exact origin and the battle it commemorates remain subjects of scholarly debate, yet its artistic significance and symbol of victory are universally acknowledged.
