Odysseus is the legendary hero in Greek mythology and the focus of the poem Odyssey by Homer. The Odyssey focuses on the life of Odysseus after the Trojan War, the 10-year journey he takes full of adventure and interruption to return home to his wife, Penelope. Odysseus is a warrior as well as a tactician, he is the one who came up with the famous Trojan Horse tactic to defeat the Trojans. Odysseus’ journey to return home is filled with unfortunate events caused by his sailors and himself. He blinded the Cyclops Polyphemus who asked Poseidon to interrupt Odysseus’s sailing at sea. The Sorceress Circe helps Odysseus but also gives birth to the son that will eventually kill him. His sailors ate a pig owned by the sun god Helios and Helios slew them all leaving Odysseus a lone survivor. Calypso the nymph mesmerized Odysseus for seven years before letting him leave her island. Odysseus finally returns home at year 10 and was unrecognizable by anyone but his dog Argus and a close servant, along with his son Telemachus they help Odysseus slay the suitors and reunite with Penelope. The story of Odysseus ends when Telegonus, his son with Circe, comes to Ithaca in search of his father, accidentally kills him in combat.
